Baker City Technicians and Technologists Vote to Unionize with ONA

On Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019, a small but mighty group of approximately 20 hospital technicians and technologists at St. Alphonsus - Baker City voted to unionize with ONA. This is a historic vote. This dedicated group of allied health workers is the first non-RN bargaining unit to join our union!

At the 2018 ONA Convention, ONA members voted to expand our bylaws to welcome allied health workers into our union – a move that will continue to build our organization’s power in an increasingly corporatized health care system.

The radiology techs, respiratory therapists, lab techs, and other classifications included in this group stood strong against an incredibly hostile anti-union campaign from their employer, including illegal threats, intimidation, and phone calls at home from the hospital’s CEO. ONA has filed an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charge against the employer for these tactics, as well as for the illegal firing of a union activist who was terminated under thin pretenses just 36 hours before the election.

These brave health care professionals will now have a chance to transform their lives and their workplace by fighting for ONA standards like fair pay, transparency, and due process--all things that that their nurse colleagues at St. Alphonsus Baker City already enjoy as members of ONA.

Welcome to our new allied health worker partners and thank you to the many allied health workers, nurses and supporters who stood with them throughout our ongoing campaign!
