Who/What is PeaceHealth?

PeaceHealth is a multibillion dollar health care system headquartered in Washington state. It operates medical centers, hospitals, clinics and home care agencies in multiple states. Founded by nuns, PeaceHealth is now run by profit-hungry corporate executives who are cutting local health care, cashing record paychecks and intruding on you care decisions.

  • In December 2023, PeaceHealth abruptly closed Eugene’s only hospital–PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center University District–leaving nearly 200,000 people in Oregon’s 2nd largest city without a hospital or emergency room.

  • PeaceHealth was recently investigated by Washington’s Attorney General and had to refund up to $13.4 million to community members after illegally charging thousands of low-income patients it likely knew qualified for charity care.

  • PeaceHealth’s corporate executives have led a series of job cuts at the company which left hundreds of health care workers without a job and severely impacted patients’ access to care in Oregon and Washington, including cutting local services like the sleep clinic and pediatric cardiology service in Springfield, a medical clinic, optometry clinic, and optical shop in Eugene, local home infusion services, LPNS, care managers and hospital security among others.

  • In 2021, former PeaceHealth CEO Liz Dunne’s compensation increased by over $2 million to $6.2 million a year.
  • PeaceHealth’s CEO and top executives enjoyed a 42% average annual increase of their salaries between 2017-2021.

  • In 2024, PeaceHealth executives were paid $21 million with more than 15 executives making $1 million or more.

  • PeaceHealth executives have repeatedly touted their 5/7/9 objective to increase profits from 5% in 2026 to 7% in 2027 and 9% in 2028. This focus on profits above all else is concerning as these percentages are far beyond industry standards for nonprofit hospitals and health systems and may lead to decisions like job cuts and hospital closures which jeopardize patient care.

PeaceHealth's executives have chosen to invest in new PR campaigns, rolling out a new logo and advertising rather than investing in the frontline workers who care for you and your family and friends. It's time for PeaceHealth to honor its commitments to its community, invest its profits into patient care, and reach a fair agreement so nurses can get back to work providing our community the care it desperately needs.
