ONA's Position on the Use of AI

The Oregon Nurses Association (ONA) opposes the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the creation of music, animation, voiceover work, writing, and other works of human creativity.

The use of AI in these fields is unethical, threatens the livelihoods of unionized workers, and undermines fair labor standards.

AI's role in replacing human creativity erodes well-paying union jobs, particularly in industries like music and entertainment.

We stand with our colleagues in SAG-AFTRA, the American Federation of Musicians, IATSE and the Writers Guild of America (among others) in opposing the use of AI in all manner of creative endeavors.

Additionally, ONA opposes the use of AI to impersonate public figures.

This practice poses serious risks related to disinformation, privacy violations, and legal challenges. The potential for AI to manipulate public perception or harm reputations is a growing concern, and we stand against its use in such deceptive ways.

ONA is equally concerned about the use of AI in nursing, particularly when AI is misrepresented as a substitute for qualified nurses. This threatens patient safety, undermines trust in healthcare, and diminishes the human aspects of nursing such as empathy, critical thinking, and decision-making.

ONA sees parallels between this issue and the use of AI in creative fields, as both threaten union jobs, misrepresent skilled human work, and pose risks to both workers and the public.
