Practice & Research

Welcome to ONA’s Professional Services Program Area. There are four components to our programs: 1) nursing practice, 2) ergonomics, health and safety, 3) Cabinets and 4) research and survey activities. Each of these components of our program area offer opportunities to learn about scope and standards of nursing practice, nursing practice trends, and evidence- and research-based solutions to practice issues.

A valued component of nurses’ practice is life-long learning and continuing competency development. ONA Professional Services offers a variety of learning opportunities to support its members and all nurses in Oregon.

A critical component of ONA’s purpose is to promote safe nursing practice that is evidence-based, meets the scope of nursing practice as defined by the profession and by the Oregon State Board of Nursing. In addition, a nurse’s specialty organization, laws and related regulations provide direction for nurse practice in this state.

The ONA Professional Services staff provides expertise and consultation to members, PNCCs and Bargaining Units about a wide variety of occupational ergonomics, health and safety issues. They also represent members' issues on state coalitions related to issues such as safe patient handling and emergency preparedness.

Find information related to the Cabinets on Human Rights and Ethics, Nursing Practice and Nursing Education. These groups are structural units of ONA who report to the Board and House of Delegates on their work.

This section of the Professional Services web pages contains descriptions of reports and documents which focus on data gathered about practice problems, practice roles or practice innovation.
