Everybody Benefits: Portland’s Campaign for Earned Sick Days

The Portland City Council voted unanimously to pass an earned sick days ordinance on March 13. Thank you to the ordinance’s sponsor Commissioner Amanda Fritz, an ONA member and retired nurse, and all the other ONA members who presented testimony, contacted the Council and wrote letters of support to local newspapers.

The ordinance will allow employees to earn sick time on the job, giving workers time to treat their illnesses without forcing them to make the lose-lose decision between coming to work sick or sacrificing their jobs or pay. Commissioner Fritz praised its passage as a historic moment for human rights and thanked supportive organizations including ONA. Earned sick day legislation is also being considered in the Oregon Legislature this year. Email Jenn at to get involved with ONA’s future earned sick days efforts.

Everybody gets sick, but not everyone has the time to recover. According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, 40 percent of private-sector workers and 80 percent of low wage workers in Portland do not earn paid sick time while working—not a single day. That’s not healthy for them, their workplaces, their families, their schools, or the people they serve. When workers earn sick time, everybody benefits.

Ensuring that all workers have the time it takes to care for themselves and their family members when sick is practical, equitable, preventative, and urgent. We can’t afford to wait.
