What is St. Vincent's Career Pathways?

It is about providing career development opportunities to the St. Vincent employee community. It developed at the request of nurses who would like tools to learn about other nursing areas and how to make themselves good candidates should they decide to transition to a new area. Career pathways will help keep great nurses working here, reduce burnout, provide nurses with opportunities to explore the next challenge, and support succession planning. This program provides access to information about nursing areas and affirms the availability of numerous career paths for nurses.

Coming in 2011 will be opportunities to learn about other departments. This will kick off on January 18, when Critical Care will provide an all-day information session outside the cafeteria, in front of the chapel.

At this session you will be able to learn more about:

  • Types of procedures
  • Types of patients
  • Hours and call
  • Entry level skills and background
  • Stressors
  • Typical day
  • Training and expectations
  • Recommended education and experiences before joining the unit
  • How to shadow and contact the unit
  • Other information about the unit
