Providence Nurses Accept Retirement Settlement

Providence nurses have voted to accept the proposed retirement settlement agreement, with 70% of the ballots cast in favor of accepting the settlement. All the votes cast, both by absentee ballot and during voting at each of the Providence facilities, were counted on Friday, December 4, 2009 at 8:30 pm. ONA staff Minh Nguyen, Rob Nosse and Alan Yoder counted the ballots, and the counting was observed and verified by nurses from the bargaining units, Glenda Peters RN, Mary Fleury RN, Juanita Wolf RN and Elayne Dragomir RN.

The "yes” vote means that all ONA-represented nurses will enter the new Providence retirement program effective January 1, 2010, and nurses who qualify will receive the transitional benefit offered by Providence. ONA-represented nurses who have been identified as active Core Plan participants will receive an equal share of a total $2 million offset payment (estimated to be approximately $740 per qualifying nurse). In addition, fair share provisions will be added to each of our existing ONA contracts, effective Tuesday, December 15, 2009. The fair share provision will also be included in a tentative agreement at Providence Medford Medical Center, where the first contract is still being negotiated. The agreement allows ten (10) days following the ratification vote for ONA members to elect to change their membership status through the December 15th date. Following this time period all nurse members will be required to maintain their membership or fairshare status within ONA.
