ONA Applauds Supreme Court Decision in Favor of Marriage Equality

The Oregon Nurses Association (ONA) applauds today’s decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in the Obergefell v. Hodges case in favor of marriage equality. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that laws in the 14 states banning same-sex marriage violate the “equal protection” clause of the Constitution. The ruling also means all states must recognize same-sex marriages legally performed in other states.

This ruling is a victory for equal rights and ONA is proud to support human rights and dignity for everyone. This ruling aligns with the ONA Health Policy Platform, supported by the ONA House of Delegates, which calls for the “support of the equal treatment under the law of all Oregonians regardless of gender, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, health status or political affiliation.”

Marriage has long been recognized as a union of love and commitment, and ONA is proud to see the court recognize marriage for all couples and all families.
