Registered Nurse Safe Staffing Bill Introduced in U.S. Senate

Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley introduced the Registered Nurse Safe Staffing Act earlier today. The ANA-endorsed bill is modeled after Oregon’s collaborative nurse staffing law but adds several key improvements.

“As the husband of a nurse, I know firsthand the many challenges nurses face and how critical their care is to patients,” Merkley said.

ONA and the American Nurses Association (ANA) today applauds the introduction of federal legislation in the U.S. Senate that empowers registered nurses (RNs) to drive staffing decisions in hospitals, protect patients and improve the quality of care.

ANA supports a companion staffing bill introduced in the House in May 2013, the Registered Nurse Safe Staffing Act of 2013 (H.R. 1821).

Help Pass the RN Safe Staffing Act!

Thank Senator Merkley for introducing the Registered Nurse Safe Staffing Act in the Senate (S. 2353) and encourage other federal elected officials to sign on to support safe nurse staffing!

“Safe staffing that enhances patient care, reduces medical errors, and bolsters nurse retention all at the same time would be a tremendous improvement to the delivery of high quality care.” – Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley on introducing the Registered Nurses Safe Staffing Act in the U.S. Senate on May 16.
