Oregon Council of Clinical Nurse Specialists Update

CNS Education Rulemaking Session

Several Oregon Council of Clinical Nurse Specialist (OCCNS) board members participated in some CNS Education Rulemaking session via the Oregon State Board of Nursing. The first draft of the CNS Education Rules is completed and will be presented to the board in the fall. The purpose of the rulemaking sessions are: to implement the provisions of governing Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) by the Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN); define the scope of practice for CNSs; establish standards for safe practice for the CNS; establish standards for the initial and ongoing approval of the CNS education programs operating in the state of Oregon, including programs based out of state; and to establish educational standards for state certification of applicants completing CNS education programs operating outside the state of Oregon. Please refer to the OSBN website here for public notice and discussion. Meeting times for the OSBN will also be available on the website.

Successful Messaging Workshop

In May, OCCNS held a successful CNS Messaging Workshop. The goal of the workshop was to focus on the development, presentation, and use of a specific “message” about CNS practice. The objectives of the program included: explain how a CNS improves patient outcomes to the lay public; show the value of the CNS to nursing directors and executives and; learn how to create a CNS position within their organization.

CNS Survey Closed

The 2013 Oregon Clinical Nurse Specialist survey is now closed. The results will be out this fall.

Open Positions

OCCNS currently has two board member positions open. Please contact Christine Valdez at if you are interested in learning more about the open position.
