AURN/ONA Nurses Rally with AFSCME at OHSU

The AURN/ONA supported OHSU AFSCME employees at their rally held in front of Mackenzie Hall on Tuesday, August 7. Susanna Rhodes, DNCC, RN, and AURN Officer, read a statement from the AURN Executive Committee emphasizing their support of AFSCME’s efforts. She encouraged AFSCME members to keep working to fight OHSU’s proposed cutbacks when she said, “This is not a struggle that you are facing alone; you have our support and we are so proud to see you, each and every day, fighting back against management’s take-backs and working so hard to protect our future and our retirement benefits. On behalf of your nursing colleagues, thank you for your dedication and your commitment.”

Two other rallies took place simultaneously at the waterfront and downtown locations and ONA representatives were there to provide support as well.

To help illustrate the realities of the proposals, all of the rallies included a skit in which the OHSU “PERS snatcher” attempted to steal an AFSCME employees “PERS Purse”. The employees in attendance were given a check made out to OHSU from the “Unappreciated Employee” for $2,880 – the average annual amount that employees will lose if OHSU proposals to discontinue the PERS pickup and increase the employees cost for health insurance are accepted and ratified by AFSCME.

AURN/ONA will continue to take action to support AFSCME during these tough negotiations. If you are interested in helping AFSCME fight off the cutbacks OHSU has proposed, contact your labor representative.
