Oregon Labor Candidate School

Have you ever considered running for public office? Apply for a spot in the Oregon Labor Candidate School!

Across America unions are under attack. Fundamental issues such as collective bargaining rights, access to affordable and quality health care, a well-designed educational system, and retirement security lie in the balance. Elected leaders, from the state legislature to local boards, make important decisions impacting union members every day.

Here in Oregon, our labor unions recognize the need to build up our activist members to step up to the next level and run for public office. (Currently only one Oregon Legislator is a nurse.) Recent successes can be found from school boards, fire districts, county commissions, city councils, and our state legislature. However, labor union member candidate recruitment and training, as well as intra-labor union coordination regarding labor candidates, has been haphazard.

Union leaders in other states, such as New Jersey, New Hampshire and Connecticut, have recognized and implemented labor candidate programs with great success. Others are following suit.

Oregon, because of the strength and collaboration of our unions, will be the next state to have a groundbreaking Labor Candidate School.

Participants in the program will learn practical skills for running for office, from fundraising, to communications, to campaign planning and will network with fellow union members.
