ONA and Providence Reach Agreement on Voluntary Separation Program

Oregon Nurses Association and Providence reached an agreement on offering the Voluntary Separation Program (VSP) to all of the nurses represented in our bargaining units across the state.

The terms of the program for ONA represented nurses will be the same as the program offered to your non-union counter-parts; a severance program and a bonus both based on years of service.

Offer letter will be mailed to all nurses with an FTE of 0.6 or greater on June 11. You will have until June 25 to submit an online request. (June 24 was a Sunday so they moved it back a day,) Providence will open the link to apply on June 12, FYI)

Providence will then determine if they can grant your request. Successful applicants will be in positions that Providence reasonably believes that they will not need to back-fill or replace in the next year.

ONA leaders believe that this could mean that very few nurses will be able to participate in this program. Most nurses are in positions that cannot be permanently eliminated, and would have to be filled even if a nurse quit or retired.

Please apply if you are interested and you think the terms are right for you, but be realistic about your chances.

Decisions will be made around July 20 and notification will be sent to successful applicants on July 27.

If there are two or more candidates on a unit for this program and only one request can be granted, skill mix will be used to make the decision (i.e. if one nurse possesses a skill that the other applicant does not have, and that nursing skill is needed the other nurse would be denied). If skills are equal among the two candidates in the same unit and shift, then seniority will prevail. ONA and Providence negotiated this part of the program.
