News: 2011-12-14 Leah Van Pelt Remembered

ONA Leader and Supporter Leah Van Pelt Dies

Leah Van Pelt, long time member and leader of ONA, died on December 5, 2011. At the time of her death, Leah was a member emeritus of the Oregon Nurses Foundation Board of Directors. Leah served on the ONA Board of Directors in the 1980s providing policy and financial expertise to the work of the Association.

Leah was generous in her support of ONA and of members. With Martha Hagglund, she established a fund to assist members with continuing education. She donated books, subscriptions and furnishings for the library named in her honor for the opening of the ONA headquarters in the new building. And, in addition to giving her time and wisdom, Leah also contributed to the ONA convention each year by donating beautiful flower arrangements for the podium.

Over her long career, Leah practiced in acute care, ambulatory care and in private duty nursing before the advent of intensive care units. She graduated from the St Elizabeth’s School of Nursing in Baker, Oregon.

Her family suggests that remembrances be made to the Oregon Nurses Association.
