Oregonians Support $1 Increase in Tobacco Tax

A new poll released Wednesday, December 1, 2011 demonstrates broad based support for an increase in Oregon’s tobacco tax. The poll, conducted by Davis Hibbitts and Midghall, Inc., showed that 71 percent of Oregon voters support raising the cigarette tax by $1 per pack with the funds directed towards health services and programs that prevent kids from smoking and help smokers who want to quit.

Support for the cigarette tax increase is bi-partisan and includes 59 percent of Republicans, 78 percent of Democrats, and 74 percent of Independents. Fifty-seven percent of voters who indicated in the poll that they are generally opposed to any new tax increases in the state to fund state services are supportive of the $1 cigarette tax increase.
