IOM Releases Report on the Future of Nursing

The week of October 5, 2010, the Institute of Medicine released its report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. The report is the culmination of two years of work and is 500+ pages long.

The IOM Committee identified four key messages and eight recommendations. Many elements of the report reflect the policy work ANA has been working toward for decades, as well as their formal Agenda for the Future in 2002. The release of the IOM report and anticipated work to implement its recommendation provide ANA, ONA and other state nurses associations within ANA, opportunities to showcase the work we have done and can do in the future.

While the IOM report contains many commendable recommendations, ANA believes there should be a greater focus on how all registered nurses can optimize education and training in their practice. The report does not address the workplace issues that impact nurse recruitment and retention such as safe staffing, safe patient handling, violence in the workplace and a host of other issues.
