Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS)

What is HCAHPS?

The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey is the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patient perspective of hospital care.

There32-item survey used to measure the patient experience.

  • Questions focus on how well nurses and doctors communicate with patients, how responsive hospital staff are to patient needs, how well hospital staff help patients manage pain, how well the staff communicate information to patients about new medications, and whether key information is provided at time of discharge.
  • There are two questions that focus on cleanliness and how quiet the areas around patient rooms are.
  • There are two questions that address overall rating of the hospital and whether patients would recommend it to family and friends.

Why is HCAHPS Important?

HCAHPS is Included in the Affordable Care Act of 2010 as a calculation of value-based incentives payments to hospitals. Hospitals are financially incentivized to obtain high performance.

Data is reported via Hospital Compare, allowing it to be compared with other hospitals and is available for public use.

The survey realizes patient-centered care as the standard.

How is the Survey Administered?

The survey is administered to a random sample of adult inpatients between 48 hours and six weeks after discharge from the hospital. Patients admitted to medical, surgical, and maternity care services are eligible.

Survey is conducted through approved third-party administrator.

In addition to the 32-items of the HCAHPS, hospitals can also collect other data through this method.
