Congratulations to ONA Endorsed Candidates! 2012 Elections Recap

In the 2012 General Election, every candidate and cause that ONA endorsed, won. From President Obama. to Portland City Commissioner and ONA Member Amanda Fritz, to a local levy in Benton County, all of our causes and candidates were successful.

Thank you to everyone who participated in ONA's election-related activities; from endorsement interviews, to phone banks, to canvasses, to advocating for our candidates to your friends, family, and colleagues.

As a reminder, ONA endorses federal candidates in collaboration with ANA. This year, we endorsed candidates from both major parties and in non-partisan races. Our PAC makes endorsements based on a candidate’s support for nursing and labor issues, voting record where applicable, and viability.

We took positions on three ballot measures, including a local public health and safety levy in Benton County, and again, voters supported our positions on all three. (No on 84, phase out of estate tax; Yes on 85, corporate kicker to K-12; and Yes on the Benton County levy, which among other things, funds a quarter of the county’s nursing capacity.)

Democrats regained control of the Oregon House of Representatives, with four of our targeted Democratic candidates (where we prioritized our PAC spending and volunteer resources) winning seats that had been held by Republicans. The Republican House members that we supported in a significant way also won re-election.

In the Oregon Senate, there were two highly contested races, and both Representative Arnie Roblan (SD 5) and Senator Laurie Monnes Anderson, RN (SD 25) won.

At the state level, Secretary of State Kate Brown and Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian were both re-elected.
