OSNA Students Participate in Providence Bridge Pedal

Members of the Oregon Student Nurses Association (OSNA) spent a wonderful day with thousands of cyclist who took to the streets and bridges at Portland’s 17th annual Providence Bridge Pedal on August 12, 2012. Board members of OSNA and students from Portland Community College and Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing staffed two volunteer first aid stations and provided mobile first aid along the 35 mile bridge pedal route.

OSNA Volunteers at Providence Bridge PedalMegan Cross, a volunteer at aid station two and OSNA board member, described her experience as a volunteer: “It was great to see so many people wearing their helmet when riding their bikes on a sunny Portland morning.” She continued, “Bike safety and health and fitness really come together at this event and I am really excited to be a part of it.”

Although the First Aid stations were busy at times with scrapes and bruises, the overall mood of the event was full of excitement and fun.

The participants who needed first aid were so appreciative of the nursing students being there to provide aid and assessments. One cyclist who was having an abrasion cleaned and bandage stated, “I’m glad you are here to help with this (referring to the abrasion on her elbow) my daughter is getting married soon and I can’t have a skinned elbow for that.”

This was the second year that student nurses provided first aid to the bridge pedal participants. Eva S., a second year nursing student at Portland Community College, said “I had a great time and will be back next year to help out again.”

Providing care and volunteering to help the community are two important values that OSNA holds. This event was a perfect way to combine these values and to promote health and safety at the same time.

OSNA would like to extend their appreciation to the organizers of Bridge Pedal and all of the volunteers who helped make these aid stations a success. ONA would like to congratulate the OSNA members for their hard work and being great representatives for the field of nursing!
