ONA Celebrates Supreme Court Ruling on the ACA

The Oregon Nurses Association (ONA) is celebrating the landmark Supreme Court decision yesterday morning which upheld the Obama Administration’s Affordable Care Act. The ruling will help each and every Oregonian, including the 600,000 Oregonians who are uninsured, have better and more affordable access to quality health care.

“This decision is a clear vindication of the Affordable Care Act and is a powerful boost for individuals, families and businesses who face skyrocketing health care costs and decreased access to health care all across the nation,” said Susan King, RN, ONA’s Executive Director. “As nurses, we see first-hand, every day, the effects of our broken health care system. This ruling helps to ensure that all American’s can look forward to increased access to care.”

“The Governor’s Health Care Transformation efforts, and Oregon’s Health Insurance Exchange, are already well underway and will have a dramatic impact on our state’s ability to provide care to our citizens,” said Steve Rooney, RN, ONA’s President. “With the Supreme Court’s decision, it is our hope that states all across the country will follow Oregon’s lead and explore similarly innovative approaches to ensuring access to health care for all.”

ONA, along with the American Nurses Association (ANA, the national association representing the profession of nursing) have worked together to promote and support the Affordable Care Act since it passed in 2010. Key features of the law include a prohibition on insurance companies denying coverage to patients with pre-existing conditions, allowing families to keep children on their health insurance until age 26, improved consumer protection including a “Patient’s Bill of Rights,” and tax credits for small businesses and non-profits to help significantly reduce the costs of providing health insurance.
