Two Groups Begin Work on the IOM Future of Nursing Initiative
by Sue B. Davidson, Ph.D., R.N., C.N.S.; Assistant Executive Director Nursing Practice, Education & Research

Two groups – the Oregon Nursing Leadership Collaborative (ONLC) and the Future of Nursing (FON) Stakeholder group – have begun to meet and initiate Oregon’s response to the Institute of Medicine report. Two meetings have been held where approximately 35 nurses from all areas of practice and differing roles have come together around 5 of the 8 Institute of Medicine recommendations:

  • remove scope of practice barriers for all nurses,
  • implement nurse residency programs,
  • increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80%,
  • lead and diffuse collaborative improvement efforts, and
  • build an infrastructure for the collection and analysis of inter-professional health care workforce data, an issue that is currently being addressed through the Oregon Center For Nursing.

ONLC serves as a facilitator of the FON groups. Stay tuned for more information about this work and these groups.
