Providence St. Vincent L&D Vacation Grievance Resolved

Readers will remember a grievance was filed in October over a change in the number of education and vacation requests allowed per day. If you would like to read those updates, visit the St Vincent Bargaining Unit Page for a summary of the grievance, and timeline of events that took place leading up to the grievance filing.

We are pleased to report that the grievance has been resolved. After meeting at the “Step 3” grievance level, we were able reach a solution that is agreeable to the nurses, ONA and the Medical Center. (If you would like to know more about the grievance process, please see your contract which is available on the ONA website)

The Medical Center agrees to grant time off to those L&D nurses who were denied vacations according to the new system (as compared to the old system) for the 6 month period April – September 2011.

As of April 1, 2011 all nurses in the maternal child division will sign up for vacations under the new system for the period October 2011-March 2012 and beyond.

The Medical Center agrees to do a second review on any previously denied education days for L&D nurses for the period April – September 2011. To request a second review, the nurse must submit the request for a second review in writing to the Director at least 1 month prior to the education event. Second review approvals will not be given for home study education days during this period.

For the coming scheduling period, October 1, 2011- March 31 2012, the staffing committee will continue to review the input of staff and work toward solutions that allow nurses to obtain time off and balance staffing needs.
