St. Vincent Labor and Delivery Feedback Sought

Dear St. Vincent Labor and Delivery Nurse:

Last fall, changes were announced to your vacation / PTO and education day system beginning April 1, 2011.

A petition was circulated by nurses, asking the Medical Center slow the process and listen to nurse input before making modifications to the number of days allowed. After we were notified the changes would be implemented without reviewing individual nurses’ input, a grievance was filed on behalf of all the nurses in Labor and Delivery. (Your contract requires that nurse input be considered in vacation scheduling, use creative and flexible approaches, and have guidelines that promote ability to take vacation, Art IIIA)

As a result of that grievance, administration scheduled open meetings with the L & D nurses in January, to hear feedback about the new system. The staffing committee has reviewed those suggestions and issued a report/minutes.

Generally, the staffing committee recommended that the new system stay in place for April 1- Sept. 30, 2011, and is reviewing your suggestions about vacation / PTO / education days after the September 2011 period. The staffing committee and ONA need to hear from you if you have input about these recommendations.

The grievance is currently on “hold” at Step 3 of the grievance process, while we try and find solutions that will work for both the nurses and the Medical Center for the period between April – Sept. 2011. In order to determine how we should resolve the grievance, we need to hear from you about the staffing committee’s recommendations.

What we need from you:

Please reply to this e-mail and tell us if you have suggestions / feedback.

What we need to know:

1) What do you think about the suggestion that the new vacation system stay in place for April – September 2011? Our grievance asked the Medical Center to slow this process down, but we want to honor the staffing committee’s hard work, and also ensure they hear from the nurses too.

2) So that we can understand how big an impact the changes had on nurses, please tell us if you were you denied vacation as a result of the new system, and if so, for what month?

Please forward this to your coworkers. We only have email addresses for 36 of 100+ nurses. Please encourage your colleagues to send their e-mail address to ONA so that we can better communicate in the future.

Best,

Sally LaJoie
