Cascade Health Solutions Nurses Solidly Reject Employer’s Offer

Nurses at Cascade Health Solution - working under an expired contract since last June- have been unsuccessful to date in negotiating a successor agreement with the employer. Following a series of Federally Mediated sessions that did not result in a tentative agreement, Cascade Health Solutions' ONA nurses, on Wednesday, solidly rejected what the Employer is characterizing as their final contract offer. Although this is a small bargaining unit, turn-out was high (78%) and the vote to reject the offer and to take further action almost unanimous (93%). The nurses are taking a strong position against this employer who apparently wants to do away with ONA’s representation of the nurses.

Cascade Heatlh Solutions is continuing to propose elimination of fair share. They continue to want to eliminate all benefits and practices not specifically listed in the contract. And they’ve proposed a wage freeze for the last six months, with only 0.5% for the remainder of this contract year with no maintenance of benefits provision.

Cascade Health Solutions is a private, non-profit organization that provides hospice, home care, occupational medicine, behavioral health, and chronic illness management services. It was created when McKenzie-Willamette Hospital sold itself to Triad Hospitals in 2003. Many nurses and others who had provided some of these services at the hospital continued to do so as Cascade Health Solutions employees. Cascade Health Solutions employs about 130 people, 18 of whom are nurses who provide the hospice and home care services. These are largely well-experienced nurses with long years of service at Cascade Health Solutions and McKenzie-Willamette Hospital. They have been represented by Oregon Nurses Association (ONA) for decades—first at the hospital and for 7 years now at CHS. They successfully bargained two previous contracts directly with CHS managers.
