Tualatin, OR – Senate Majority Leader Richard Devlin (D-Tualatin) was honored as the 2009 Oregon Nurses Association Legislator of the Year last night at an awards ceremony in Tualatin. ONA conducts an annual evaluation of all Oregon’s legislators in relation to their efforts at promoting or protecting the profession of nursing, and recognized Devlin for his lifetime of dedication to Oregon’s nursing professionals and their patients. Previously, Devlin had received a "Friend of Nursing” award in each of the last seven years, the most awards ever given to a single legislator.

Susan King, Executive Director of the Oregon Nurses Association, said in a statement, "Nurses in Oregon should be proud to have a champion like Senator Devlin working for them in Oregon’s legislature. His commitment to the profession, his understanding of our issues, and his dedication to promoting quality health care for all should be a model for all our of elected officials.”

Devlin’s record in the 2009 legislative session included sponsoring a nursing faculty loan forgiveness program that will increase the number of much needed nursing faculty in the state. In addition, Devlin supported funding for the Oregon Center for Nursing, the Worker Freedom Act which banned mandatory employer meetings, a clinical trial insurance coverage, and also lead statewide initiative reform efforts in the Senate.

"This recognition means a great deal to me,” said Senator Devlin. "Oregon’s nurses make significant contributions to our communities. I’m glad to support their work and I look forward to continuing our partnership in the future.”

Jack Dempsey, ONA’s Director of Health Policy and Government Relations, gave the award to Devlin at 7:00pm in Tualatin, at the Oregon Nurses Association office, saying, "Senator Devlin deserves the thanks of ONA, ONA’s 11,500 members, and all of Oregon’s nursing professionals.”
