2010 ONA Labor Educational Day and HOD

ONA would like to thank all of our members and guests that made this year’s Labor Educational Day and House of Delegates a success! These events are made possible by the participation and enthusiasm of all of our amazing members in an effort to share experiences, learn from each other and work diligently to move the organization forward, improve working conditions for nurses and advance the field of nursing to create a healthier Oregon.

A special thank you goes out to National Federation of Nurses president, Barbara Crane, RN, for making the trip to Oregon in order to share her experiences with all of us, visit some ONA represented facilities, talk with our members and see how things are going in our wonderful state.

Congratulations to Pamela Schulz, of Good Shepherd Medical Center, who won the 2010 Quilt Raffle. Through the efforts and generosity of our members, the Oregon Nurses Foundation raised $7,865 to be put toward future scholarships. Thank you to everyone who purchased their tickets and to all of the districts who made generous donations.

ONA would also like to thank Allen Alley, Bill Bradbury and John Kitzhaber for taking the time to attend the Governor Candidate Forum on Saturday and answer the questions that are important to ONA members.

Finally, congratulations to the newly elected officials and to the 2010 E&GW Award winners. The hard work and tireless efforts you have all invested over the last year and the work you will be doing in the upcoming years is appreciated.

Labor Educational Workshops

Session A – Generational Mix in the Workplace (by Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service)

All organizations are experiencing a new challenge these days. For the first time in history, there are four distinct generations in the workforce, each with different expectations, traits, characteristics, values, and work styles. This workshop is designed to help you meet the challenges of understanding how and why these differences manifest in the workplace today, and how you can use this knowledge to enhance both your organization’s and your own ability to work and communicate more effectively across the generations. Instructors: Kathleen Erskine and Darrell Clark, Commissioners, Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.

Session B – Being an Effective Nurse Representative—Basic Training

Unit representatives wear many hats – they can be problem solvers, communicators, and grievance handlers. This workshop will cover both disciplinary and contract interpretation grievances, investigatory meetings, problem solving outside the grievance process and outreach and communication with your co-workers. Unit representatives will learn how to enforce the contract and involve the membership in solving workplace issues. Instructors: Julia Stewart and Maureen Smith, ONA Labor Relations Representatives

Session C – Contract and Work Action Campaigns

This session will examine the value of organizing and work actions in support of stronger contract negotiations. We will review basic contract campaign components and provide tools to RN leaders that can be readily applied in each bargaining unit. We will also brainstorm and draft a campaign calendar together. Instructors: Minh Nguyen, ONA Organizer and Gary Nauta ONA Labor Representative
