The goal of professional services' Ergonomics, Health and Safety Program is to promote ergonomics, health and safety awareness and education among nurses in all practice settings and to advocate for a safe and healthy work environment in health care.
The ONA professional services staff provide expertise and consultation to members, PNCCs and Bargaining Units about a wide variety of occupational ergonomics, health and safety issues. They also represent members' issues on state coalitions related to issues such as safe patient handling and emergency preparedness.
There are numerous health and safety issues associated with health care facilities. Unfortunately, nursing personnel have one of the highest job-related injury rates of any occupation. This section of the ONA website will provide links to information and resources that fall into the five categories of safety risk hazards that are common in health care. These areas include: biological/infectious risks, chemical risks, environmental/mechanical risks, physical risks, and psychosocial risks.
