NW Environmental Health Conference

Registration is now open for the 4th Annual NW Environmental Health Conference: “Bridging Research, Practice, and Policy.” The conference will be held on Friday February 10, 2012 in Portland, Oregon at University Place Conference Center near PSU. The conference hosts leading scientists, researchers, and health professionals in the multidisciplinary field of Environmental Health to continue our robust dialogue on the interrelationship between the environment and health and healthcare practices. The 2012 conference will focus on environmental chemical contributors to obesity and diabetes and explore how such health disparities may arise, in part, because of different levels of exposures to chemicals of concern.

Delegation and working in teams with assistive personnel is a complex critical thinking skill that requires expert professional practice and emotional intelligence. In this webinar, we will review the basics of the American Nurses Association and National Council of State Boards of Nursing’s 5 Rights of Delegation, as well as the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, and then apply those principles to challenging practice situations. We'll discuss the current research about making assignments work, and then answer questions about real life scenarios offered by previous participants. We will leave the airwaves open for discussion and your questions.

Dr. Ruth Hansten is the author of Clinical Delegation Skills: A Handbook for Professional Practice (4th Ed., Jones and Bartlett, 2009). She has worked nationally and internationally with 170 health care organizations as a consultant and educator. See below for full bio

Objectives:

Review the 5 Rights of Delegation and Supervision as outlined by the ANA and NCSBN Joint Statement on Delegation.
Define delegation and supervision according to Oregon statute and rules.
Review current literature related to making assignments work in acute care settings.
Solve case scenarios related to delegation and supervision questions from the field:
"How do you delegate to a nursing assistant who is twice your age?"
"How do you safely delegate tasks when you are a float or you don't know the competencies of the person to whom you are assigning tasks?"
"What do I do if someone refuses to do what I ask her/him to do?"

Presenter's Full Bio

Ruth Hansten RN, MBA, PhD, FACHE is the author of six books and numerous articles. Her mission is to promote healing and wholeness, transforming organizations through relationship enhancement and skills development. With 37 years of experience in nursing, she brings both a practical and humorous approach to the essential work that nurses do. For the past 20 years her national consulting practice has worked with nursing care delivery models, critical thinking, delegation and leadership skills, and interdisciplinary team development. She has developed a care delivery model and philosophy called Relationship and Results Oriented Healthcare™ (RROHC) and this model had resulted in improved patient outcomes, clinical indicators, employee engagement, provider satisfaction, and healthcare employee retention. Her doctoral research focused on critical thinking and clinical judgment and she incorporates her research into her teaching and consulting strategies. In 2008 the 4th edition of her Clinical Delegation Skills: A Handbook for Professional Practice book was published as was her Relationship & Results Oriented Healthcare™ Planning & Implementation Manual. She has served as adjunct faculty for the University of Washington and Seattle University School of Nursing, and has lectured or consulted at 170 organizations. She currently serves as a Board of Directors trustee at a Pacific NW medical center.
