Upgrade your nurse leadership skills at ONA’s Bargaining Unit Leadership Conference Friday, Sept. 30 to Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Portland Hilton and Executive Towers in downtown Portland.

  • Solve local issues through concerted actions
  • Build strength through issue-based organizing
  • Identify and develop nurse leaders
  • Use Oregon’s hospital nurse staffing law to improve your workplace

Join ONA nurses and staff from across Oregon to discover new ways to engage your coworkers, build nurse strength and create a community of committed advocates who can lead changes in your facility.

Purpose

Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the interstate compact and Oregon nurse staffing law. Participants will be able to improve their leadership skills in the workplace and identify other potential leaders in the field of nursing.

Nursing Contact Hours

Learners can earn up to 3.25 continuing nursing education contact hours.

Oregon Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Requirements for Successful Completion of this CNE Activity

In order to obtain a Certificate of Successful Completion for this activity, the learner must complete the following criteria:

  • Sign in at the registration desk
  • Attend both days of the conference and attend each session that has a CE component
  • Complete and submit the online evaluation form for each session attended by no later than November 1, 2016

Participants who successfully complete the above requirements will receive a Certificate of Successful Completion from the Oregon Nurses Association for the contact hours claimed during the evaluation process. Participants should only claim the sessions which were attended in full. Any participant who has NOT claimed their contact hours by November 1, 2016 will NOT receive a Certificate of Successful Completion.

Session Details

Plenary Sessions

  • Staffing 202: How to map the staffing committee process and discover how and where nurses can wield power. What to do when the hospital says “no” to proposal that would create a safer staffing environment. How to mobilize your coworkers to push for safer nurse staffing levels. 
  • Issue Organizing Panel Discussion: Nurses from ONA hospitals will participate in guided discussions on how they were able to organize their coworkers around issues and the outcomes they were able to achieve. Issues discussed will involve workplace safety fights, patient care issue organizing, staffing wins and successful contract campaign actions.

Breakout Sessions: Over the two-day event, attendees will participate in each breakout session. Attendees will be split up into smaller groups to attend the breakout sessions in order to allow for more group discussions and interactive sessions.

  • Membership Engagement: This session will teach participants how to build ONA membership by creating connections based on shared interests, values and work in their communities and facilities. These kinds of connections help to create a commitment to ONA on a greater level. Participants will learn how strengthening membership by increasing ONA’s visibility and create strong investment in the goals and vision of the union and the future of nursing in Oregon.
  • Leadership Development: This session will teach participants how to expand their capacity to be effective in leadership roles and how to develop new leadership on their units. These roles help set the direction for the bargaining units and help maintain commitment between ONA leaders and the nursing population. Participants will learn successorship planning, ways to involve nurses who are new to leadership and develop stronger leadership skills.
  • Inclusive Bargaining Units - Eliminating Barriers in the Workplace: Nurses have long been leaders in fights for equality. Breaking down barriers for women and working to be seen as valued health care providers and professionals in the workplace. In this session we will look to the future of ONA and discuss how we can continue that movement towards equity and inclusivity. Participants will learn ways they can help shape the future of nursing in Oregon by creating a union that represents people from variety of diverse backgrounds and reflects the communities they serve.
