ONA Calls for Transparency from Secretary Richardson on Conflicts in around Health Care Referendum

The Oregon Nurses Association is calling on Oregon Secretary of State Dennis Richardson to release documents relating to Referendum 301 and his communications with the chief petitioner of Referendum 301, Julie Parrish, who Richardson has hired as a paid political consultant and with whom he has numerous political and financial connections. Richardson has paid Parrish nearly $330,000 from his campaign including a payment as recently as July 3, 2017.

Parrish also serves as an elected official in the state House of Representatives and has contributed more than $20,000 to Dennis Richardson’s campaign.

Richardson's close political and financial relationship with Parrish are deeply concerning as he prepares to oversee the election process on a referendum where she is the chief petitioner. If Referendum 301 is successful, more than 350,000 Oregonians who gained health insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) insurance expansion would lose access to the Oregon Health Plan (OHP).

With so much at stake for our patients as well as the integrity of Oregon’s electoral system, ONA has sent Richardson a letter requesting full transparency around this issue and issued an official public records request.
